Hout Bay - More than an average town
Category Hout Bay
The serene town of Hout Bay is famous for its fish and chips, thriving harbour, great events, and laid back lifestyle. Life in this peaceful town is tranquil with a gorgeous beach and spectacular views of the mountains. Situated in a valley on the Atlantic Seaboard of the Cape Peninsula, Hout Bay ("Houtbaai" meaning "Wood Bay" in Afrikaans) is a mere twenty minutes away from the centre of Cape Town.
Over the years urban development has been at the forefront for the upliftment of Hout Bay. However, the fishing village has maintained its unique and timeless beauty with its fishing harbour and country atmosphere. The mesmerizing views and protection from the surrounding mountains are some of the reasons that make Hout Bay an attractive area to both locals and visitors.
Hout Bay is home to the best fish and chips
At the end of World War II, the Poland-born Hans Mickeleit visited Cape Town and fell in love with the port village of Hout Bay. After arranging for his family to join him, Hans purchased an old bus and converted it into a takeaway serving fish and chips to the local fishermen. Calling the takeaway Snoekies, little did Hans know that the local joint would become a world-renowned tourist favourite. Today, Snoekies is still situated at the far end of Hout Bay Harbour and continues to provide locals and tourists with a generous serving of delicious light, crispy-golden battered hake and freshly-cut chips from as little as R49.99, whilst enjoying the exquisite harbour views.
Hout Bay Beach is an Instagramer's heaven
The stunning Hout Bay beach is surrounded by soft, powdery sand dunes, turquoise waters, and remarkable mountain ranges. The picture-perfect beach stretches about a kilometre in length from Chapman's Peak towards the Hout Bay Harbour and varies between 200 - 400m in width. There is enough space for beach games for the whole family, such as volleyball, cricket, touch rugby, as well as flying kites. If you are lucky on some days you may also spot the friendly dolphins and whales in the bay. And if you feel for a snack on your day out, the beachfront offers many eateries that are sure to make your IG followers green with envy.
Catch a glimpse of the resident Cape seals
Famous for its marine wildlife Duiker Island/Duikereiland is home to one of the largest seal colonies in the Southern Hemisphere - the Cape Fur Seals.
