Are you destroying your home with these bad habits?

Category Property Advice

Your home should be your biggest investment rather than a depreciating asset. How you take care of your home is vital as bad habits can cost you tons of money. Your daily routines can be damaging your home as some bad habits can cause long-term damage, even lowering its value. Are you destroying your home with these bad habits?

Clogged gutters
A clogged gutter can cause really drastic issues. Gutters are designed to carry water away from the roof, the walls, and the foundation. A clogged gutter can seep into the foundation or the walls of your home and cause water damage. Try to clean out your gutters every three months. In the case of a heavy storm, ensure there are no clogged up branches and leaves in the gutters. Cleaning out soggy leaves is not the ideal chore, but can save you tons of money and keep your home in good shape.

Not cleaning your appliances
It is advisable to clean your electrical appliances after every use. The build-up of dirt can cause them to deteriorate much quicker and reduce their lifespan. Appliances such as tumble dryers can be a potential health or safety hazard should the filters not be cleaned properly and regularly. Dirty microwaves and ovens are also a detrimental health hazard as you are using them on a daily basis.

Slamming doors
While slamming the door can be seen as expressive in an argument, it can, unfortunately, lead to you destroying your home. Each time that you slam a door, you loosen the hinges which can create gaps and allow outside air and moisture into your home. You can also pull the door out of alignment by slamming your doors repeatedly. The next time that you have the impulse to slam a door, think about the damage you can cause to your home.

Ignoring leaks
A drippy tap or pipe can become a serious issue. Little leaks can destroy the flooring under a sink as well as cause the growth of dangerous mould in your walls. Do not ignore leaks any longer as fixing them up would not only add value to your home but also save you money on your water bills.

Neglecting your paintwork
Paint helps to protect your home. If your paint is peeling off or has faded, it can make your home look neglected and old. Change the look of your home by adding a fresh coat of paint both outside and inside. Wooden floors also require regular re-coats of paint to avoid damage and rotting.

Allowing gardens to grow wild
Wild lawns and unattended gardens can cause major damage to your home. Creeper plants can be problematic and should be maintained before they block windows or work their way onto the roof. Trees can also cause havoc if they are not trimmed. Make sure that the branches will not fall directly onto your home and cause unwanted expenses and damages. Take note of how trees grow, as their roots can also destroy your home and pathways.

Forgetting to open your windows
Opening your windows and doors allows for fresh air to circulate in your home. Unhealthy mould spores can easily build up, so it is important to keep your house dry. These mould spores can not only destroy your home but are also dangerous for younger children and elderly folk.
